At the SMART Centre, our mission is rooted in bringing affordable, sustainable water and sanitation technologies to underserved communities across Tanzania. By focusing on low-cost, innovative solutions, we’ve been able to improve the quality of life for thousands of people, especially in rural areas where access to clean water and sanitation is often limited.

One of our flagship innovations is the Rope Pump, a simple yet effective technology that enables communities to access groundwater in a more affordable and sustainable way. Compared to traditional, expensive boreholes, rope pumps are significantly cheaper to install and maintain. In villages like Itipula, this technology has empowered families to access clean water directly from their homes, drastically reducing the time spent fetching water.

We’re also proud to promote bio-sand filters, a low-cost filtration system that provides safe drinking water by removing harmful bacteria and contaminants. In areas where water sources are polluted or unreliable, this technology has been a game-changer. By offering locally produced bio-sand filters, SMART Centre ensures that even the most vulnerable populations have access to clean and safe drinking water.

Beyond individual solutions, our focus on rainwater harvesting systems has helped tackle water scarcity in regions that experience seasonal droughts. These systems allow communities to capture and store rainwater for domestic use, agriculture, and livestock. The long-term benefits of these systems are clear—improved food security, better hygiene, and a greater sense of autonomy over vital water resources.

By integrating low-cost technologies, the SMART Centre is not just addressing immediate water and sanitation challenges but also empowering communities to take ownership of these solutions, creating a more sustainable future.
